Nimesh Chahare, Ph.D.

Dr. Nimesh Chahare is a postdoctoral fellow in the Stuart group at EMBL Barcelona, where he studies how stem cells self-organize into neural tube organoids. He founded and convenes the International Epithelial Mechanics Fan Club, a volunteer community of early-career researchers across the globe. He trained as a mechanical engineer in India before a PhD in applied mathematics at UPC and IBEC Barcelona with Xavier Trepat and Marino Arroyo, where he built microfluidic devices that control the shape and internal pressure of living epithelial tissue, and used them to pattern folds on demand. As a postdoctoral scientist at Columbia University with Nandan Nerurkar, he turned to the embryo itself, showing that the early cranial neural tube expands as an active shell. His goal is to understand how physical forces shape tissues at different scales.
